2 South Dakota towns nominated for USA Today Readers’ Choice Awards in arts. Who they are:

Sioux Falls has been nominated for a USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best City for Street Art, according to an award description on USA Today’s website.

“While Sioux Falls might not immediately spring to mind as a street art destination, this Midwestern city has cultivated a thriving public art scene that tells stories of its history and culture,” according to the website.

From the sculpture walk to “The Arc of Dreams,” Sioux Falls’ downtown has become a thriving art community over the years.

Sioux Falls’ sculpture walk has taken place in the city since 2004, and has spotlighted over 836 sculptures, according to the Travel South Dakota website.

The long-standing exhibit recently hosted its “largest exhibit yet,” according to previous Argus Leader reporting.

Additionally, the city recently stood in the national spotlight as Mayor Paul Tenhaken supported a young graffiti artist in the area. The pair was featured on CBS’ Beg-Knows America.

Tenhaken, who coined himself as “an art guy who appreciates art” in the CBS article, commissioned the young graffiti artist to create a mural, a print of which now hangs behind his desk.

As of Friday, Sioux Falls was No. 6 on the USA Today leaderboard, according to the website. The top position was held by Cincinnati, Ohio.

Vermillion nominated for small town arts scene

Also nominated in an arts category is Vermillion. The small town was nominated for favorite small town arts scene, according to USA Today.

“What each of these towns lack in size, they make up for with big arts scenes — museums, art galleries, performing arts, and busy event calendars,” the nomination read.

Vermillion sat in the 12th place spot on Friday, according to the USA Today leaderboard. The No. 1 position was held by Abingdon, Virginia.
