Sometimes a song just comes and goes. It’s like a flame on the head of a match. The thing is struck, lit, and then vanished in the breeze. But that’s not always the case for music. Sometimes it can stick around for years—even decades—and have a sublime impact on popular culture. But that only happens for the lucky few.
Here below, we wanted to examine three examples of when that happened. More specifically, a trio of one-hit wonder tracks from rap artists that have not only stuck around in the zeitgeist but have become cultural mainstays. Indeed, these are three hip-hop one-hit wonders that have become cultural standards.

“Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot from ‘Mack Daddy’ (1992)
This ode to the bodacious posterior is like a sonic chameleon. It is a peg that can seemingly fit into any hole required of it. Karaoke jam? Check! Throwback radio hit? Yup! Sample for a sexual Nicki Minaj number? No problem! Tune perfect for a TV commercial? Why not! When he released his 1992 offering, Mix not only earned a Grammy and No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, but he created a versatile, ever-lasting work that will be remembered for generations.
“Just A Friend” by Biz Markie from ‘The Biz Never Sleeps’ (1989)
This song was not only a big rap hit when it was released at the end of the 1980s, but it became a crossover smash that would go on to hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was beloved by the most ardent of hip-hop heads and casual music fans. It’s impossible to know, but we would guess it might be the rap track that landed on the most mix tapes and mix CDs in the 1990s. Everyone loved it. You couldn’t go wrong if you played it at a party. And today, it remains an iconic love triangle song that makes your heart ache and your mouth grin.
“Whoomp! (There It Is)” by Tag Team from ‘Whoomp! (There It Is)’ (1993)
Released on the Tag Team album of the same name, this 1993 track is simply synonymous with parties today. Not only is the song emblematic of a good time, but merely saying the song title gets people in a jovial mood. That’s hard to do. But when the Tag Team duo pulled it off, they made a real musical achievement. It’s no wonder that the offering hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. If a song equates to a good time, people want to hear it again and again. That remains true today.
