9 Penn State dance communities of different dance genres

Whether you’re a dance prodigy or have two left feet, Penn State’s dance scene has something for you.

With a wide range of genres and cultures, Penn State has tons of different dance teams and groups that are open to students and the State College community alike.

Here are nine of 30 different dance communities you can check out on OrgCentral.







THON, Saturday morning, Penn State Dance Alliance

Dance Alliance

Founded in 2007, the Penn State Dance Alliance is a jazz-based dance team that’s open to undergraduate students at University Park.

The team practices three times a week for two hours in the White Building and performs throughout the school year at many different campus events, including THON and the Homecoming For The Glory Talent Show.

Entrance to the team is determined by auditions that are held at the beginning of each fall semester.

Whiplash Dance Team

Making history as Penn State’s first all-girl hip-hop dance team, Whiplash performs for many different campus events, including Homecoming and THON.

Although the group primarily focuses on hip-hop, its annual spring show includes other types of dance such as jazz, tap and lyrical.

Whiplash will hold an information session at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Thomas Building 104 ahead of auditions.







Lantern Festival Gala, ACE Dance Crew

Aces Dance Crew

Aces Dance Crew is a diverse dance group that’s open to all undergraduate and graduate students at University Park.

The group offers students a variety of styles between its five dancing departments, including popping, breaking, urban, girl’s K-pop and boy’s K-pop.

Aces also has five backstage departments, including event planning, fundraising, media, styling and secretary.







Shimmy Like A Nupe

Afrique Fusion

The official dance team of Penn State University Park’s Chapter of The African Student Association, Afrique Fusion’s mission is to “enhance the understanding of the African Heritage through dance.”

The team not only educates its audiences about Africa but tells stories through the different styles of African dance such as Azonto, Shoki and more.

The group holds tryouts at the beginning of each semester along with workshops and collaborations with other dance groups at Penn State.







THON 2024, Island Fever

Island Fever

As University Park’s only Caribbean dance team, Island Fever upholds its culture as an inspiration for its choreography and mission.

The group stays true to its roots by encouraging representation of all Caribbean countries through their routines.

All dancers are welcome to audition no matter their ethnic background.

Island Fever holds an information session before auditions at the beginning of each semester.

Social Dance Club at Penn State

Social Dance Club promotes bachata, salsa, Argentine tango, ballroom dance and several other styles.

The club hosts workshops and free dance lessons open to all students and the State College community at all different levels.

The group’s mission is to provide a “fun social atmosphere” through socials and other events throughout the school year.

Lyrical Line Dance Company

PLL Dance Co. is a “family first” dance group that primarily focuses on lyrical dance but also encourages other dance genres, such as contemporary, jazz and hip-hop.

The group’s rehearsal schedule is designed to be flexible with each individual member’s schedule, so students can participate in other activities outside of the company.

PLL Dance Co. is made up of around 30-40 girls who perform in biannual showcases throughout the school year.

There’s a two-hour mandatory full rehearsal company on Sundays, and then members can participate in additional 30-minute small group classes during the week that will be performed during showcases.







Urban Dance Troupe Showcase - Group Formation

Urban Dance Troupe

The troupe originated at Penn State Altoona’s campus before making its way to University Park’s campus in 2005, becoming Penn State’s first official hip-hop dance team.

Entrance into the student-run dance troupe is audition-based, although the group occasionally holds open classes.

The group performs throughout the year at many different events, including THON and the Paul Robeson Center’s Pride in Our Community Pep Rally.

UDT was named Penn State’s Best Dance Crew in 2024.

K-Pop Music and Dance

KPMD is a group that enjoys dancing and listening to K-pop, watching K-dramas and immersing itself in all things Korean culture.

The dance team is open to all students at University Park with no entrance fees. Members have the option to pay dues for the semester to be a part of KPMD’s performance team and other perks.

General body meetings are held at 7 p.m. every Saturday in 133 White Building.
