Los Angeles, Calif. – Feb. 1, 2024 – PBS SoCal, Southern California’s flagship PBS station, announced today the new PBS Digital Studios series OUTSIDE THE LYRICS, examining the cultural significance and emergence of fashion trends, dance styles and photography developed through Hip-Hop’s rise. Hosted by writer, multimedia producer and professor of media arts and culture Dr. Robeson “Taj” Frazier, the three-episode series is produced locally by PBS SoCal and presented by the documentary-focused YouTube channel, PBS Voices. With support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), new episodes will roll out weekly and be available to stream on PBSSoCal.org, YouTube.com/PBSVoices and on the free PBS App starting with the first episode on the surprising origins of streetwear available today, Thurs., Feb. 1.

OUTSIDE THE LYRICS is a continuation of the digital series HIP-HOP AND THE METAVERSE that featured Hip-Hop artists and entrepreneurs engineering the sound of the future. In the new series, Frazier continues the conversation with revolutionary designers, choreographers and photographers whose influence in the 90s shaped Hip-Hop culture today. OUTSIDE THE LYRICS kicks off with fashion icon Chris Gibbs who discusses the fusion of Hip-Hop and skater culture in fashion, leading to what is now known as ‘streetwear.’ Episode two features Hip-Hop dance legend and “Queen of Krump” Marquisa “Miss Prissy” McCray who discusses how a dance style she helped develop in South LA transformed popular dance. Episode three introduces viewers to one of Hip-Hop’s most prolific photographers Brian “B+” Cross who reflects on capturing the authentic moments of the movement, contributing to the rich visual archive today.

The dates that the digital episodes in OUTSIDE THE LYRICS will be available to stream and their descriptions are as follows:

“Fashion: Premieres February 1”

Host Dr. Taj Frazier meets with Chris Gibbs, Hip-Hop head, skater, fashion tastemaker and owner of the famed LA streetwear boutique, Union, to learn how two seemingly opposite cultures came together to redefine fashion.

“Krump: Premieres February 15”

Host Dr. Taj Frazier meets hip-hop dance legend Marquisa McCray, a.k.a. “Miss Prissy, the Queen of Krump” to discuss how a few young adults in South LA transformed a dance style into a global phenomenon. “Krump” is a unique West Coast dance style that emerged in the late 90s and early 2000s that was originally performed in dance battles in local parking lots and soon found its way to the national stage with major musical acts.

“Photography: February 29”

Host Dr. Taj Frazier meets with one of Hip-Hop’s most prolific photographers Brian “B+” Cross to learn how his iconic photographs and the growing community of photographers changed the way we see Hip-Hop.
