DJ Akademiks has become a primary source for Hip-Hop news in recent years, much to the chagrin of artists and other voices in the space. Statik Selektah recently expressed how he disapproves of Elliott Wilson and Joe Budden giving the Off The Record host a platform.
The 42-year-old producer appeared on BagFuel this week and was asked about his disdain for the former Everyday Struggle host. “He disrespected the queen Erykah Badu, that’s number one on the top of my list,” Selektah said. “Number two is he’s disrespectful to Hip-Hop. I mean, he’s not a DJ but he puts that in front of his name.” The hosts attempted to correct him and say Ak DJ’d when he attended Rutgers University, but the Trillstatik 3 artist wasn’t hearing it.
He continued expressing his thoughts before transitioning to specific people who highlight the controversial media personality. “I don’t like when like — and Elliott Wilson’s an old friend of mine, Joe Budden’s an old friend of mine — but these dudes, I don’t like when they give him the platform,” he said. “‘Cause if Akademiks is on his own, and he got a bunch of 12-year-old girls watching him, that’s on him. But as soon as you put him on the Rap Radar’s and Complex and all that, and The Joe Budden Podcast, whatever it is, you’re giving him a platform now that actually has some — is legit.”
One of the BagFuel hosts asked if Statik Selektah felt that “they,” referring to Elliott Wilson and Joe Budden, were enabling DJ Akademiks; “Yeah, absolutely,” he replied. Selektah seemingly made peace with his issue given the fact Ak has been quiet lately since he is dealing with a rape lawsuit. He also expressed that he stands with Freddie Gibbs, who previously feuded with the streamer in the past.
Last month, the Lawrence, Mass., DJ shared a similar sentiment when Akademiks was the go-to source for Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef. “I just woke up seeing that Elliott Wilson, Joe Budden, and all these people still give this f**king clown Akademiks a f**king platform,” he wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post. “Stop it […] Stop putting Akademiks on your f**king platforms. Clowns out here. When the f**k did we start letting clowns that don’t know anything about hip-hop be in this sh*t period that know nothing about this sh*t. F**king nerd.”
The standout portion of his post was a video of him punching a punching bag that had a picture of Akademiks’ face taped to it. “In the words of my man Prodigy, there’s a war going on outside nobody is safe from,” he said before delivering the punch combo.
DJ Akademiks was responsible for debuting the official version of Drake’s diss record “Push Ups” this past April. He hinted at the 6 God releasing music on the nights “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6” came out as well in early May. After the beef ended, he did a full breakdown of the information Drizzy and Kendrick Lamar used against each other, claiming that the Toronto superstar lied about planting the information K. Dot used on “6:16 In LA” and “Meet The Grahams.”
