Red Summer TV presents the feature-length documentary “Tale Of The Tape: How The Mixtape Revolutionized Hip-Hop,” now available for streaming on Prime Video, Spectrum On-Demand, and Verizon.

The film was directed by Malik K. Buie and executive produced by Buie, DJ Envy, and Kim Osorio, the film, was produced from 2012 to 2022, offering viewers never-before-seen insights into the realm of mixtapes. “Tale Of The Tape” explores the rich history of mixtape culture and its transformative impact on rap. Before playlists, DJs dictated the pace, with a rapper’s status marked by placement on key DJ mixes. These mixes resonated through neighborhoods, underground shows, and clubs worldwide.

The mixtape symbolized hip-hop’s essence, reflecting its pulse as it moved into the mainstream, facing commercialization, criminalization, and digitization. The documentary features rare performance footage of Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole and includes interviews with Kid Capri, DJ Clue, and DJ Drama. Industry veterans Lenny S and the late Combat Jack share pivotal stories that help guide the film. STR8 BANGAZ crafted the original score, blending the golden era of hip-hop with contemporary sounds, incorporating interview excerpts mixed by renowned DJs.
