Nas has joined the team of creatives working to bring Beat Street to Broadway. Working with Arthur Baker, who was a co-producer of the original film, the Queensbridge legend will work as producer and help expand the project’s original soundtrack.
“Beat Street wasn’t just a film – it spread the revolution of hip-hop culture throughout the country and the world. It left an indelible mark, inspiring generations of young artists and creating new hip-hop fans alike,” Nas said.
“It’s a thrill for me to join the creative team of Beat Street, bringing the raw energy of hip-hop into the fabric of Broadway. It’s an honor to breathe new life into this iconic work and celebrate its enduring legacy.”
Released 40 years ago, Beat Street is one of the first feature films to highlight Hip-Hop’s rich culture. Starring Rae Dawn Chong, Gus Davis and Jon Chardiet, the film follows a graffiti artist, a DJ, and a break-dancer in the Bronx as they search for success and recognition in a growing Hip-Hop scene. Along the way, the trio runs into Doug E. Fresh, DJ Kool Herc, The Sonic Force and several other pioneers.
The musical adaptation of the classic film is still in its early stages. More Hip-Hop luminaries are expected to join the creative team in the weeks to come.
