The DJ “cut song” has always been a dedication to the DJ in a given crew, which allowed them to showcase their cuts and scratches over an instrumental beat that, many times, the DJ themselves produced. Other times, the MCs from the group would dedicate a song to their DJ boasting about their skillset on the ones-and-twos.
