Cincinnati Art Museum hosting new traveling exhibition celebrating hip-hop

RIGHT HERE. HERE ON WLWT. ALL RIGHT, A TREAT HERE. TODAY, THE EXHIBITION OF SUMMER IS HERE. THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM IS NOW HOME TO A NEW TRAVELING EXHIBITION. ALL RIGHT, SO IT IS CALLED THE CULTURE, HIP HOP AND CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE 21ST CENTURY. IT CELEBRATES THE GENRE’S INFLUENCE ON ART AND FASHION AND JOINING US HERE ON THE COUCH TODAY, D’ARCY SLOSS WITH THE ART MUSEUM. THANKS FOR BEING HERE. OH, THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. IT’S A PLEASURE. YOU KNOW, THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING. SO TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THIS EXHIBIT AND WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL. IT’S AN AMAZING EXHIBITION. IT HAS MORE THAN 100 MULTIMEDIA ARTWORKS THAT ARE REALLY CELEBRATING AND HIGHLIGHTING HIP HOP’S IMPACT ON SOCIETY, FASHION ART OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DECADES. AND WE’RE TALKING, I SAY MULTIMEDIA. I REALLY MEAN MULTIMEDIA. WE HAVE PHOTOS, VIDEOS, HUGE VIDEO SCREENS, WE HAVE MUSIC PLAYING IN THE GALLERIES. WE HAVE FASHION PIECES. IT IS AN ABSOLUTELY AWESOME, ENGAGING EXHIBITION AND I THINK JUST PEOPLE ARE ENJOYING IT SO MUCH. YEAH, IT SOUNDS AMAZING. THIS IS A TRAVELING EXHIBIT AS WELL. WHERE DID IT ORIGINATE AND WHAT’S THE LOCAL CONNECTION? ABSOLUTELY. SAINT LOUIS IN BALTIMORE WERE THE ORIGINATORS. IT ORIGINATED IN THE MUSEUMS. THERE, AND A TRAVELING EXHIBITION. YOU ALWAYS WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT ONCE IT COMES HERE THAT WE DO HAVE A LOCAL FLAVOR AND LOCAL INTERPRETATION, AND WE HAVE THE MOST AMAZING LOCAL CURATOR FOR THIS EXHIBITION. HE IS DOCTOR JASON RAWLS. HE IS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HIP HOP AT OSU, AND HE IS ALSO A VERY NOTED DJ AND PRODUCER HIMSELF. SO HE WAS VERY, VERY INVOLVED IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE EXHIBITION. THE EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, HOW WE’RE LEARNING ABOUT IT AND HOW PEOPLE ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE IT. SO HE HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN EVERY ASPECT OF PUTTING IT UP HERE AT THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM. IT LOOKS I’M TRYING TO WATCH THE VIDEO WHILE WE’RE TALKING. IT LOOKS REALLY, REALLY COOL. EXPLAIN TO PEOPLE WHEN AND HOW THEY CAN SEE THIS EXHIBITION. The Cincinnati Art Museum is now home to a new traveling exhibition celebrating hip-hop’s influence on art and fashion.The exhibit, known as “The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century,” will be on view from June 28-Sept. 29 this year.The exhibition will feature works by over 90 artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roberto Lugo, Carrie Mae Weems, Mark Bradford, with fashion looks from Chanel, Gucci and Virgil Abloh’s collections for Louis Vuitton.On Tuesday, WLWT was joined by Darcy Schwass with the Cincinnati Art Museum, who talked more about what people can expect at the exhibit.To watch the full interview, click the video player at the top of the story.The exhibition will be on view in the Western & Southern Galleries, with tickets starting at $12 each.
