KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Member of legendary hip hop group N.W.A., and writer of classic movie series such as Friday and Barbershop, Ice Cube spoke with KCTV5′s Janae Hancock ahead of his upcoming tour stop in Kansas City.
Ice Cube along with Westside Connection will perform at Grinders on Friday, July 26. Cube was last in Kansas City in 2019 for The Big 3 and he says that he is excited to return with new music.
“I been waiting to get back there. I got a lot of fans in the area that’s been supporting me for 40 years in the game. To be able to come back with al this music from NWA to all this new stuff; its gone be a fun and night and definitely a good day for sure,” said Cube.
Cube has said in previous interviews that he wants to be an impact artist. In 2024, N.W.A. Received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for their impact on hip hop culture.
Cube has not only left an inedible mark on the music industry but also in Hollywood. Movies such as Are We There Yet, All About the Benjamins, Ride Along and The Longshots added to his writing credits, giving him range in writing for all kinds of genres.
“When I decided to do Are We There Yet, movies like Longshots [KeKe Palmer], those movies were done because I knew that my fans were having kids now. I didn’t want my fans to have to tell their kids ‘Hey, yo, you know who that is? That’s Ice Cube, remember him?’…I wanted my fan’s kids to know me,” Cube said.
Cube went on to say talk about the journey that his younger fans take in discovering his movies beyond children’s movies.
“Its been a great career move. I’m happy to see people that come up to me and say ‘I been a fan since Are We There Yet, I grew up on that’ and now they’re at the show and they’re getting a different side of my art. Its pretty cool,” Cube said.
Sports has also been a big deal for Cube as he founded The Big 3. Cube says he is intentional about bringing it back to the metro area as he noticed how receptive the crowd was.
“Hopefully we will come back to Kansas City. The audience was very appreciative and receptive to the game. It was still new so people didn’t know what to expect but I believe everybody had a great time,” Cube shared.
Fans can expect to hear all of his classics such as Straight Outta Compton, Express Yourself, No Vaseline, and It Was A Good Day on Friday along with new material. Cube even mentions that WC (Dub-C) will also be in attendance.
Tickets are currently on sale. The doors will open at 7 p.m., and the show will begin at 8 p.m.
