SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The Savannah Cultural Arts Center offers an adult hip hop class and we decided to join in!
“Put your feet out. Hands out to the side. Hands up.”
Like most workouts, it all starts with a stretch.
“Left, right.”
But the pace picks up rather quickly and the hip hop moves take over.
Savannah Cultural Arts Center Instructor Darrell Davis makes the atmosphere quite welcoming.
“I love it, I love it.”
So welcoming that he gave me a run down before the class started.
The instructor, Darrell Davis, said, “this class right here is catered for adults. At the same time the class doesn’t have a bunch of people with experience.”
Making it perfect for a beginner.
Davis says no class is the same as they explore different genres that cross paths with hip hop.
“The styles of dance does not always remain the same. There may be a time where you learn street jazz. You’re going to learn basic parts of hip hop whether it be a pop or a lock.”
But not a drop for us this time just some afrobeats which was a hit for Jammie Foreman who has come to every hip hop class this summer.
“I love that the city is now offering cultural classes. I am going to take every last one of them that they offer…and I have enjoyed every moment of it.
“The dances are so nice. He takes his time with us and it’s just fantastic,” said attendee Jammie Foreman.
And that reaction is typically the same across the board.
“Always nothing but smiles, laughs and people having a good time. People are feeling great. They forget about the week that had. They just come here and know this place right here is a place of zen.”
And a place get your steps while learning some fun dance moves.
“Finish it off, finish…go off. And that is the adult hip hop. How did you enjoy it?”
“I loved it. I’m sweating y’all.”
Registration for their next round of classes is July 22. They have Monday and Tuesday classes. The deadline to register is mid August.
