Tory Lanez Charts A New Hit—One He Recorded In Prison

Tory Lanez is currently serving what may turn out to be a decade-long prison sentence. The musician was charged with shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion, which he continues to deny, though a jury of his peers believed differently. The controversial artist isn’t letting his incarceration stop him from making music, and now he’s scored a new hit on the Billboard charts with a tune he recorded from the North Kern State Prison in Delano, CA.

“Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)” debuts on a trio of Billboard rankings this week. The tune appears to be Lanez’s first new win with a track he recorded from prison–a fact which is noted in the name of the song.

Lanez launches his new release highest on the Hot R&B Songs chart. On that list, it brings the troubled musician back to the top 10, as it debuts at No. 7.

“Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)” marks the highest start on Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed R&B-only tunes in the country. The cut is also Lanez’s seventh top 10 on the tally and his twenty-eighth career placement on the list.

The same track also reaches two other tallies, though it doesn’t climb quite so high. “Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)” starts at No. 14 on the R&B Streaming Songs chart. It’s also new at No. 33 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs roster.

“Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)” is one of several cuts Lanez has released while incarcerated. His team started this new rollout plan by sharing older material, which is referred to as “lost” when shared with the public. Those songs he writes and records while behind bars—which are reportedly made via phone calls and with the help of an engineer—are distinguished from others, as the words “Prison Tapes” are added to the end.

Lanez has so far doled out four tracks from his “Prison Tapes” series. “Wish I Never Met You (Prison Tapes)” arrived on July 26. One day prior, he began the promotion with “Cell 245 (Prison Tapes),” which so far hasn’t made a commercial impact. Several others have been shared since, and the artist apparently has plans to keep the music coming.
