Hip-hop icon Fatman Scoop is dead at age 53 after collapsing on stage at a concert, his tour manager says.
The rapper and radio personality suffered a medical emergency and passed out behind the DJ booth during a show Friday night in Hamden, Connecticut. Video shows people rushing over to administer CPR as the music stopped; he was stretchered off stage and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, according to Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett.
Fatman Scoop’s death was announced early Saturday morning by DJ and producer Birch Michael, also known as Pure Cold, who identified himself as the rapper’s tour manager.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts I announce the passing of Issac Freeman III, professionally known as Fatman Scoop,” Michael wrote. “I am honestly lost for words … you took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet, the things you taught me have truely [sic] made me the man I am today. Thank you so much, I love you x.”
According to the New York Post, Fatman Scoop’s death was also confirmed by Reminisce Festiva in the UK, where Fatman Scoop was scheduled to perform on Sept. 7.
“His absence will be profoundly felt by everyone,” the festival said. “He was not just one of our most popular performers, he was a cherished member of the Reminisce family.”
A cause of death and additional details have not been announced.
Fatman Scoop, whose real name is Isaac Freeman II, was a rapper and hype man whose booming voice was heard on the 1999 club favorite “Be Faithful” (feat. Crooklyn Clan) plus hits like Missy Elliott’s Grammy-winning “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That.” He also collaborated with artists like Ying Yang Twins, Rihanna, Kat DeLuna, Chingy, David Guetta, LL Cool J, Timbaland & Magoo, Ciara, Skrillex, and DJ Kool.
“Prayers up for fatman scoop !” rapper Juicy J wrote on X.
“I can’t even remember attending a party growing up without hearing a Fatman Scoop x Crooklyn Clan Party Break. He had the ability to not only give hit records more energy & make them better but he made them HIS. His party breaks were legitimately cheat codes for DJs. You could cut on a Fatman Scoop Party break & it could get a similar reaction to the hottest record in the world,” Ringer host Raheem Palmer wrote. “Life is so short.”
