Howells Glass Co. celebrates a century in business with new Wall 2 Wall mural in Lancaster

To mark a century in business, Lancaster city’s Howells Glass Co. paired with some of the top graffiti artists in the area to create a new piece of public art.

The glass company partnered with Wall 2 Wall, a loose collective of area artists who have spent the past two summers adorning different walls in the city with large, imaginative art pieces. Lancaster city artists Eric Regester and Justin Jones completed the project in late June.

Regester says that he and Jones have been wanting to do a mural on this wall since last summer’s inaugural Wall 2 Wall season, though the enormity of the project meant waiting until this summer.

“We pitched it to them earlier this year and thankfully we didn’t have to redo anything, they liked the first idea we came with, which is what’s on the wall now,” Regester said.

Due to the size of the piece, which Regester estimates at 40 feet wide by 100 feet long and the poor condition of the wall itself, it took nearly two months to complete. The finished piece is by far the most traditional of the dozens of pieces that Wall 2 Wall has created in the last two years, but Regester said that the crew still got to include some of their trademark graffiti-style touches.

“I pitched to them at the beginning, I was like, ‘I’ll give you a very traditional mural on the front half of the building, and then you let me and my homies rock huge graffiti burners in the back of the alley with the leftover paint,’” Register said. “It’s a free-flowing continuation of the main piece.”

Over the last 100 years, the company has engaged projects big and small, from helping to smooth out glass family heirlooms from city residents to large scale commercial work with companies including Turkey Hill, Lancaster General Hospital and Park City Center.

Founded in 1924 by George Washington Howells as Howells Lancaster Auto Glass & Paint Company, the company was family-owned for much of its existence, up to Robert G. Howell, who took over the business from his father Robert R. Howell in 1995.

In January of 2024, Howells ceased being family owned when current owner Robert G. Howells sold the company to Dallastown-based company Garrety Glass, which has continued to operate Howells at its traditional location.
