ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Back to school season was extra special for one Rochester elementary school as it unveiled a new art installation Tuesday.

St. Pius X Catholic School celebrated its new outdoor mural with a blessing ceremony. The painting, done by local artist Greg Wimmer over the course of three weeks, depicts Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Students and staff gathered outside at 9:30 a.m. to get an up-close look at the final product.

“People walk by, they can enjoy it,” Wimmer said. “I’ve had meals where people say, ‘oh, I just love to go by, that I love to see that,’ you know, its outdoor work and mural work is so the general public, they don’t have to go to a museum to see art, and people, I find, just enjoy having nice pieces artwork.”

School principal Daven Jenson says the idea started two years ago when a student gave him a hand drawing of Mary.

“And then one day we had a police squad car in our back parking lot, and I just went out there to see if he needed anything or just see if there’s anything I should know about, and he said, ‘I didn’t even know this was a school,’ and then it was just kind of one of those moments where I thought, well, we really need to do something outside so that people know, you know, that we’re a school and that we’re a Catholic school,” Jenson said.

Jenson says Wimmer also painted a mural inside the school back in 2011. This mural depicts the different virtues.
