Black Mafia Family Founder Big Meech Released From Prison

Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory of the infamous Black Mafia Family is inching closer to freedom as he was transferred to serve the rest of his prison sentence outside of a cell.

Complex has confirmed that Flenory was moved from the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Coleman Low to community confinement, which is overseen by the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Miami Residential Reentry Management (RRM) Office. That means Flenory will either be in home confinement or a Residential Reentry Center, otherwise known as a halfway house. Flenory was transferred on Oct. 15, 2024.

According to legal documents from the Federal Bureau of Prisons website, Flenory is expected to be released on Jan. 27, 2026. In a statement to TMZ, Flenory’s attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, said she was “overjoyed” by the news of his release and claimed he used his time in prison to focus on his personal growth and that the door is wide open for him to begin a new chapter in his life.

“Two decades is an incredibly long time, and it’s been inspiring to witness the power of hope and resilience,” Barnett told Complex in a statement. “He used his time in prison to focus on personal growth and transformation, and now he has the opportunity to begin a new chapter.”

Barnett continued, “He’s out, but millions more remain trapped inside – there’s still so much work to be done. We need to push for real change, for a justice system that recognizes the dignity and potential for redemption in every individual. Our commitment to challenging the injustices that still exist within the criminal legal system remains unwavering. There is nothing more urgent than freedom.”

Flenory was initially arrested in 2005 and was later sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2008 after being convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering through his BMF organization. Earlier this year, Barnett was able to have 32 months removed from his sentence.

Big Meech and his brother Terry Lee “Southwest Tee” Flenory created BMF as a creative agency and Hip-Hop label in 1985. However, federal agents suspected the brothers were up to no good and using their company as a money laundering front. BMF reportedly made over $270 million in cocaine sales across the United States.
