Who is DJ Clark Kent? Real name and all about the artist amid recent reports of his death

Born on September 28, 1967, Rodolfo Antonio Franklin aka DJ Clark Kent, is a Panamanian-American DJ, music executive, and record producer from New York City. Clark is best known for producing hit tracks for artists like Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and Notorious B.I.G. He produced three of Jay-Z’s hits including Brooklyn’s Finest and Sky’s the Limit from the Notorious B.I.G’s album, Life After Death.

Clark started his career in the late 1980s as the DJ for American rapper Dana Dane and began his production career later. He was the host of the DJ competition called Clark Kent’s Superman Battle for World Supremacy in 1994. He also spent time at the artists and repertoire division at Atlantic Records and East West Records. Additionally, DJ Clark is also credited with designing sneakers for brands like Nike and Adidas.

On October 16, 2024, The Source reported that DJ Clark Kent had passed away due to an undisclosed illness and the publication claimed that they received the news from a member of Clark’s family. However, the news was debunked by prominent personalities like Questlove from The Roots, Angie Martinez, Pete Rock, and DJ Scratch via their social media platforms stating that Clark was alive and that the publication should stop spreading misinformation.


“Clark is home with his family”: Angie Martinez slams rumors of DJ Clark Kent’s death

Shortly after The Source published the news of DJ Clark Kent’s death, radio personality Angie Martinez took to X (formerly Twitter) on October 16, 2024, to inform everyone that the news wasn’t true. In her tweet, Martinez called out the publication and mentioned:

“The article that The Source Mag & others have posted about the passing of Dj Clark Kent is false. Clark is home with his family. Please refrain from sharing any other false information. It is hurtful, deeply irresponsible and untrue.”

DJ Scratch also took to Instagram and posted a text mentioning Clark hadn’t passed away with the caption of his post asking The Source and others to stop spreading fake information.

Additionally, Pete Rock mentioned on his Instagram:

“A lot of y’all online need to get a life. Quick to report some s**t. [Shaking my f**king head]. [I] can’t stand some of y’all.”

Moreover, Questlove from The Roots disregarded the news of Clark’s death on his Instagram story and stated that:

“DJ Clark Kent is STILL with us. I know a lot of you are rushing to be ‘FIRST!’. But until word or statement comes from his wife or family, can y’all please quit with the misinformation? It’s stressful as it is.”

Posts from such prominent personalities led to The Source addressing the situation via X on the same day, replying to Angie Martinez’s tweet stating that they were approached by Clark’s family member with the information. The publication also stated that they were pleased to hear of the DJ’s well-being and apologized for reporting false information.

The Source also posted another apology post via X stating that they had removed the post from their platform out of respect for the DJ and his family.


In other news, Angie Martinez is about to make her directorial debut with a feature-length documentary on Clark as per The Hollywood Reporter on August 26, 2024. The documentary is titled God’s Favorite DJ: The Story of DJ Clark Kent and it will include appearances by DJ Khaled, Jay-Z, and other big names from the industry.
