REVIEW | Spit Gemz

Spit Gemz - Knifework

There has never been any question about the incredible talent that Spit Gemz possesses when it comes to writing raps and spitting bars. Now, his latest project ‘Knifework‘ continues to cement that legacy as one of the illest to ever do it, as he delivers poignant street poetry with an aggressively confident flow. When you have a confidence in your ability, and use your passion to drive the work, the results are usually impressive. And that’s just one of many words we can use to describe the new 9-track Spit Gemz project.

Before we get into reviewing the album, let’s take a second to advise people where they can cop this joint. It’s not on streaming platforms, it’s not on Bandcamp – you can ONLY get this album from Spit Gemz himself, so make sure you get in touch with him on the socials, send him $15 and get one of the dopest projects of 2024, all while ensuring 100% of the funds go to the artist!

Now, some people have been blessed enough to hear the single ‘Build Destroy Build 2‘ featuring the late Chino XL. Not only is this one of the dopest tracks of the year, but this track alsop brought to fruition a relationship / pairing that had the utmost respect for each other. The two emcees go SUPER hard with the bars on this one, and the Nickel Plated beat is luckily robust, and banging enough for this heavy bar work! It’s menacing, it’s moody – it’s masterful. You can check this joint out below if you need ANY more reason to go ahead and cop this project.

It feels backwards recognizing the lasty track from the album first, but such is the quality and impact of the song, and the nature in which we have heard it – it also feels like the right way to approach this. Now, we take aim at the 8 other banging joints! ‘Holla Looyuh‘ kicks things off with a church-choir sounding start, before the drums really come in and make that neck snap. Aye Wun is the master of the boards for this joint and it keeps the triumphant, keys and vocals in the mix, which balances the ferocity Spit Gemz delivers.

The Unconquered Sun‘ is a dirtier, grimier, more menacing score produced by Kut One. Spit Gemz is in his element here, delivering heavy bars, but also bringing that unbridled confidence in his pen and delivery – and the hook reinforces that with deep impact. A more traditional boom bap joint, ‘Victory of the Soul‘ takes a more methodical approach to delivering the lyrical prowess. The guitar riff slices through the dusty drums, and Gemz drops plenty of knowledge through his bars before the Vinny Idol produced ‘Idolatry (Decadence)’ slaps you in the face with a heavy dose of wicked wordplay over a hypnotizing audio canvas. “Happiness of the knife ain’t a metaphor, it’s the function (of life) / Say my name when you talk about penmanship / I been holding class so long, I got tenureship” Gemz spits, and you really can’t argue with him, when the proof is always in your headphones.

There aren’t many features on this project, but Home School (Aye Wun, Eff Yoo) appear on ‘Break Into Heaven‘ and that chemistry is instant as they each deliver their usual top-tier bars and bravado over a Buckwild banger. Bub Styles shares the Seth Silensir produced track ‘Ox Tales‘ with Gemz and the results speak for themselves. Nothing but ferocity on that mic, bars delivered with purpose and passion, like two heavyweights landing blow after blow until that bell sounds. This track is an anthem. A rugged, kick your teeth in banger that gets the head nodding and all kinds of stankface happening.

‘Mickey Mantle’ starts of with an interesting instrumental, then eases into a more boom bap score, that would be at home as a soundtrack to some horror or thriller. Gemz murders this joint, showcasing his mastery of language, and his ability to create vivid mental imagery through his rhymes. The penultimate joint is ‘Nux Vomica‘ and it’s another threatening score, where Spit Gemz speaks on a range of life related topics from politics to powder, and does so with an authenticity that very few could accomplish. You can’t just ‘listen’ to Spit Gemz, you are always challenged as a listener, whether its the content, the delivery or the sheer knowledge and questioning he brings with his pen.

This is another home run for Spit Gemz and his Broken Home / Home School movement. His ability to curate an album with nothing but top-tier production is a guilty pleasure, and his pen has always been remarkable. The passion and energy in his flow, captivates you from the jump and holds that attention until you press repeat! Go and grab this album now – you won’t be disappointed.
