Commentary: Public art is important to city culture

Art should be supported no matter what form it comes in. Whether it be murals of a figure in history or graffiti to express a social viewpoint, public street art is necessary to city culture.

The meaning of art is meant to tell a story, an interpretation of a more significant message, or just to be a creative expression.

More public and street art should be promoted to add cultural value to Charlotte. It makes public spaces beautiful and creates a sense of community for all of us to engage with.

Any form of public art is essential for observing social commentary in our world as humans.

Some beautiful minds have created a political or environmental message that speaks deeply to our social foundations and is worth discussing through an art piece by an artist who wants to raise awareness of a particular subject.

Many uptown Charlotte murals show the importance of culture and give the city character. The piece titled “Equity” is by the great artist Nick Napoletano.

Mural titled “Equity” by Nick Napoletano.

Napoletano is interested in women’s empowerment. This mural showcases a woman painting a mural about equity, with a man in grey at the bottom right trying to cover up the mural. For more information on this mural, you can visit the website

The location of where public art is made is also pivotal to the creative process. Napoletano mentions that painting “Equity” was an area where a total of people had no homes to live in and would listen to their stories while painting.

Interacting with people of different backgrounds can generate new ideas and concepts to paint in a location like Napoletano. Promoting a great message such as “Equity” can spark a feeling within someone that can benefit their well-being.

If an area seems to have lost hope, art can be a reminder to find hope and strength just through a painting.

However, there is a stigma encompassing public art that tries to connect it to vandalism, but that is not the case. Public art creates more benefits than harm. Public murals can make spaces feel safer and attract tourism, which helps out the city. They can also generate employment with businesses. The most important thing about art is that it invokes emotion.

The power of murals and graffiti is that the art can elicit emotions. Some can cause us to remember a memory of a lost one, of love, family, friends or just life in general.

This negative cloud surrounding graffiti and murals is unfair to the artist who put out their hard work to be creative. Being creative should not be viewed as a crime. Artists benefit by being recognized for their work and potentially creating opportunities to get their name out there.

Artists can create a business, collaborate with others or create content. The possibilities are endless.

Several areas have fantastic work from artists on the Art Walks CLT website. They host community events and walk trails to explore the beautiful artwork that Charlotte has to provide.

Another area to check out is the South End. There is a gorgeous display of murals all over South End.

Art is important, and public art is important. We should not ever try to shut down artistry. Instead, we should find more ways to encourage artists to express themselves and promote community and union.

We all need a sense of togetherness that public art brings to help us continue this life path.
