Guwahati: Hundreds of civilians, including members of several organisations and artists, took to the streets of Guwahati on Tuesday, demanding the release of the arrested graffiti artist and the others apprehended for purportedly using disparaging slogans against CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on a canvas while protesting against proposed tree-felling at Bharalumukh for a flyover project.
Angkuman Bordoloi and graffiti artist Marshall Baruah were apprehended by the police on Monday after being questioned for approximately 24 hours. They were subsequently remanded to judicial custody by a local court on the same day. Bordoloi and Baruah, alongside a few others, took part in a protest through art and music on Saturday night against the marking of over 70 trees at Bharalumukh designated for felling for a flyover project.
A day after their arrest and incarceration, hundreds of people gathered near the historic Dighalipukhuri tank and staged a demonstration demanding their release. Renowned actor Himangshu Prasad Das said the duo fulfilled their duties as genuine artists by raising their voice using art as a medium. “The responsibility of an artist is to highlight current issues through their creativity. Marshall’s canvas raised a pertinent contemporary issue,” he added.
“We would not have emerged in support had they chosen undemocratic and violent means to protest. They exercised their fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and staged their protest through art. We condemn the arrest of Angkuman and Marshall,” he added.
He beseeched everyone, including the artistes’ fraternity and those in politics, regardless of their political affiliations, to unite for environmental protection for future generations.
