A new online journal is exploring music and nightlife’s role in the ongoing struggle for Palestinian liberation.
Launched with the support of DJs Against Apartheid, Forward/Scratch debuted its website last month. The all-volunteer editorial team is seeking work from contributors that “takes a deep look at political movements and the role musicians play in them.” A submissions guide can be found here.
Its first series, “Resist/Track,” highlights protest music, pairing tracks with a short essay on its origins. The inaugural song is Palestinian hip-hop group DAM’s “Meen Erhabe (Who’s the Terrorist?)” from 2001.
“There is a long and deep tradition of protest and resistance music globally, from the hymns written by enslaved Africans to contemporary reggaeton tracks rejecting the colonisation of Puerto Rico,” founder Amani del Pilar told Resident Advisor. “By continuing this tradition, we carry forward the lessons of its history.”
Forward/Scratch plans to morph into a fully-fledged fundraising platform for victims of colonial violence. It currently offers a paid subscription tier, proceeds of which will be donated to a rotating mutual aid fund.
