REVIEW | Pro Dillinger x Futurewave

Pro Dillinger x Futurewave

The second installment of the Pro Dillinger and Futurewave collaborative series, ‘Dirtwave Vol. 2‘ picks right up where the first volume left off, and continues to build one of the fiercest chemistries in hip hop! Both Pro and Futurewave have had incredible years, each dropping mulitple projects and by all measures, are each at the top of their game. Where ‘Dirtwave Vol. 1’ introduced us to this dynamic duo, Vol. 2 expands the relationship, diving deeper into the repertiores for each, resulting in some of the dopest hip hop delivered in 2024. It’s half an hour, of hard hitting, razor sharp hip hop, with soul / funk infusions, gritty, grimey street poetry and a cohesiveness that’s found when you get two titans at their peak.

The opening 30 seconds sets the tone for the following 30 minutes – the pairing of Pro Dillinger and Futurewave is DANGEROUS! From the warbling, synth effects on the production, to Pro’s ‘break your jaw, that’s a chin check’ bars…. they ain’t messing around! After ‘Heavy Heart‘, the second joint is ‘Play The Game‘ which is a little slower and more methodical, and actually gives you those ‘Above The Rim’ / 2Pac’s ‘Pain’ kind of vibe sonically. Pro gets speaking on his ability to play the game, his ambition and how he’s risen through the ranks, before it’s a more intropsective and emotive production on ‘Outside‘ featuring Shoddie. But this is just the velvet glove on the iron fist.

There are soulful vibes on ‘Stay Moving‘ which evoke a whole range of emotions, especially when Pro is spitting some of these ‘growing up’ stories and how broken homes, broken promises and broken bones shaped the youth. Eto joins the fray on ‘Honourable Activities‘ with dope results, the two emcees bringing a razor sharp pen game and chemistry that is flawless. The production once again seamlessly reverberates in an understated fashion, the horns cutting through the grime with triumphant energy. ‘New Sneakers‘ continues to deliver the horns, but this joint is far more of a traditional boom bap joint, with menacing keys and ferocious verbals from Pro.

Mind My Business‘ uses his pen to deliver some background to The Umbrella Collective and how he continues to grind in the background, all done over a moody instrumental from ‘Wave. ‘Church Socks‘ is up next and this joint features Bub Styles so you already know it’s going to be grubby! The drums are crisp, the head gets nodding and each emcee controls that microphone like they’re personally in your headphones. Bub gets AFTER this joint in a big way! A slight change of pace on ‘Bigger Picture’ with some more delicate production from Futurewave, and melancholy lyrics from the Umbrella Collective general. This isn’t contrite though, there is a real authenticity to Pro’s street poetry.

The album closes with ‘Pray 2 God‘ and the album closes as strongly as it started. Dillinger spits passionately over the production for two minutes, just commanding your attention and the albums finishes with an ominous soundbyte… but, like they said from the jump… to much of them is dangerous!
