Artist of the Week: Collin Scott

Collin Scott is a 21-year-old multimedia visual artist based in Redmond, Washington. He focuses on themes of mental health, substance abuse, grief and daily life with influences from graffiti, abstract expressionism and popular culture.

Seattle Refined: How long have you been creating? What mediums do you work with?
Scott: I have been creating my whole life, whether that be doodling on a piece of homework in grade school or creating small ceramic pieces and paintings as a kid. I really started to take my art seriously about five years ago at the beginning of the pandemic in 2019.

Can you tell us about your artistic process and how the different stages work into it?
My process consists of about four steps depending on what I am making — always starting in the sketchbook and then refining that sketch to get a better idea of what I am trying to make, then creating a sketch on a canvas or a “skeleton” of a sculpture, and finishing it off with the production and craftsmanship to execute the final piece.

Tell us about where your inspiration for your art comes from.
My inspiration comes from the desire to create something. I always feel like I need to be making something when going about my daily life. It is how I can express myself in a way that is unmatched by any other outlet.

Do you have a specific “beat” you like best – nature, food, profiles, etc.?
I tend to focus on iconic cartoon features along with the abstraction and illustration of different animals.

Do you have one piece of art that means more to you or is extremely special to you?
One piece of art that has constantly inspired me and continued to influence the rest of my art is a digital illustration that I did at the beginning of 2023 called “Teething Tiger.” This tiger has continued to show up in my drawings and has led me to create other animals that exist with the tiger.

What experiences in your life have affected your art the most?
Experiences that have affected my art would be losing some people in my life, and art was a way that I was able to pull myself out of some dark places during these times of grieving and loss. My art has also been influenced heavily through growing up and experiencing the world on my own.

If we want to see more of your work, where should we go to find it?
To see more of my work, check out my Instagram, @artofcollin, or my website.

What is next for you? Anything you’re working on right now that you’re really excited about?
Currently, I am working to complete my Bachelor of Fine Arts at Washington State University. Heading into my final semester, I am working to put together a body of work that represents me as an artist. This will happen in April of 2025. Further, after that, I am working to expand my creative practice as an artist and really dive into the deep end of creating art and living as an artist.

Lastly, how do you take your coffee? (We ask everyone!)
I actually do not enjoy coffee or caffeine too much, but if I were to take my coffee a certain way, it would be very sweet.
