Joe Budden Says ‘Karen’ Drake is Ruining Hip-Hop

Joe Budden claimed that Drake‘s defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group was tarnishing hip-hop culture, and he called him a “Karen” because of it.

On the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the former rapper didn’t hold back when speaking about the 6 God’s lawsuit against UMG claiming defamation. According to Budden, Drizzy has been playing two sides of the coin in this feud with UMG, stating he’s acting like a “Karen” with the lawsuit but, on the flip side, fronts as a tough guy in other instances, such as hanging out with fellow Canadian Top5, who recently threatened to shoot Kendrick Lamar if he ever made his way to the 6.

Budden used Drake hyping the fans who visited his house during their feud in the mid-2010s as an example of the superstar choosing the best side in a specific situation. Budden then said Drake needs to choose what he wants to be, as the “code-switching” leaves a bad taste in his mouth.

“That’s my other beef with the ‘Karen’ move ’cause if you a ‘Karen,’ be a ‘Karen,’ but you code-switching,” said Budden at around the 46:00 mark. “You at the game running around with this n***a that has been threatening Kendrick saying, ‘I’m a kill you, I’m a do X, Y, Z,’ I’m not naming no names. but you know who you running around with, and you know what you doing, and you know what you threatening, so if you that then be that. But don’t be that and also ‘Karen’ out […] I don’t like it. It’s nasty and disgusting.”

Budden added later in the conversation at around the 58:30 mark: “Don’t mob ties me to death. That’s my beef with ‘Mob Ties’ Drake. I miss Drake. There are too many artists that are suffering from an identity crisis or begin to lose themselves when they get in this shit. I miss the original Drake…The n***a with the Blackberry and the corny T-shirts that couldn’t dress with no beard that everybody just wanted to get next to and get some of that corny sauce. Y’all knew that n***a wasn’t like us, but he had the magic touch.”

Budden claimed Drake’s latest antics, such as dropping collaboration albums with certain artists and working with overseas artists, are hurting his stock. According to Budden, he doesn’t understand what Drake has evolved into and doesn’t see what’s going on as “evolution.”

“This shit hurts. This is like the hip-hop version of the fucking House seats where they’ve been dominated for 90 years and now we got this one small window to where we can make a change and see these labels take a fall,” he said at around the 1:08:00 mark. “And the few n***as that could have did it, y’all end up fighting with each other, taking a deal and only looking out for self.”

He continued, “There’s no unity in hip-hop, none of y’all know what culture means — actually, they’ve been telling y’all what culture means ’cause they own the shit. This shit is a fucking mess. It’s disgusting. And if you love this shit, it hurts!…I’m saddened as a diss track king, as a n***a who loves to get on the mic and tell lies about my opponent….Horrible things get said [in rap beefs], man. I just don’t like the Karen play-both-sides, the aggressor and the victim.”

Budden ended his take by saying the new generation can have this version of hip-hop as it’s not the culture he fell in love with. He believed he’s “aged out of this shit” quicker than he initially thought, and it makes him upset as he loves hip-hop too much.
