DJ Unk, a trailblazer of the Southern hip-hop scene and a pioneer of snap music, has passed away, TMZ reports. He was 43.
His passing was confirmed by his wife Sherkita Long-Platt on Facebook.
“Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER,” the post read.
Born on Nov. 28, 1982, in Atlanta as Anthony Leonard Platt, he began his music career in the late 1990s. He formed Southern Style DJs with DJ Montay and DJ Jelly. The DJ collective was known for throwing parties across Georgia. Eventually, Unk and Montay signed a record deal with Big Oomp Records in 2000.
In 2006, DJ Unk released Beat’n Down Yo Block! He came to national prominence with his breakout hit single, “Walk It Out.” The classic song peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “2 Step”, his follow-up, single also made it onto the charts and was certified gold.
2econd Season, his sophomore project, further solidified him as one of the unquestioned innovators of snap music.
In 2009, he began to experience unspecified health issues which had a detrimental effect on his music career. He went on to drop more singles. In the following years, and was featured in the 2K Sports NBA 2K9 video game.
Known for his infectious beats and energetic live performances, DJ Unk became one of the defining voices of the Atlanta music scene. He gained worldwide recognition for his contributions to hip-hop.
