Anthony Leonard Platt, known as DJ Unk, passed away in his sleep due to a heart attack, as confirmed by his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt. In a post mourning her loss, shared with both intensity and simplicity, she requested privacy for her grieving family, stating, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.” Long-Platt denied rumors regarding her late husband’s death being connected to substance abuse, which had circulated prior to the cause of death being revealed, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta.
As a mainstay of the Atlanta hip-hop community, DJ Unk was widely recognized for his hit single “Walk It Out.” His breakthrough track scaled the heights of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, entering the top 10 and establishing his presence in the industry. In the ensuing years, he released two albums—’Beat’n Down Yo Block!’ and ‘2econd Season’—spawning tracks like “2 Step,” which also charted impressively and became integral to Southern hip-hop’s snap subgenre.
In reflection of his impact, DJ Unk’s widow announced that a candlelight vigil was planned for the evening in his Atlanta neighborhood. Speaking to Billboard, DJ Unk had previously expressed his gratitude toward André 3000 for featuring on the remix of “Walk It Out,” “I never dreamed that he would get on a record like that because he’s so powerful as far as hip-hop and music and everything, so it’s a blessing. That was a dream come true. It was like doing a song with Michael Jackson,” seeing the collaboration as a peak moment in his career. DJ Unk’s work remained influential, with his music reaching new generations, such as a sampling of his song “Hold on Ho” in GloRilla’s 2024 debut album, ‘Glorious.’
Funeral service details for Platt have yet to be disclosed.
