SRU Street Styles is a hip-hop and breakdance group open to all majors and skill levels.
The club was formed last semester after president Cam Sims took a breakdance class with instructor Jason Noer and felt inspired.
“Slippery Rock always had a more modern, ballet-type of contemporary dance scene,” Sims said. “I needed…to create my own hip-hop group that was available to everybody else on campus besides just the dance and theater departments…it was time for us to have a hip-hop, more cultured dance type of thing to be brought into this world.”
The group tentatively meets every Tuesday and Thursday for about an hour of rehearsal and workshops.
“We’re gonna be teaching moves, teaching combos,” Sims said. “Whatever you need help with, we will help you out with it.” He claimed the point of the group is for people to grow their skills while having fun.
“You can come there and be free…there’s no judgment at all because no one’s the best dancer, everyone’s had different styles that they are more fluent [in]. It’s an all inclusive group, members can have any type of opinions, ideas, stuff like that.”
Their first performance will be at the BIPOC PAVA showcase on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium. The concert itself is dedicated to uplifting the contributions BIPOC have made to music, theatre, dance and art.
“It’s not the whole group…these are just the people who we chose to dance and be represented as Street Styles.”
Other SRU Street Styles performances will include general body members and are still in the process of being planned. Those interested in joining can email cas1063@sru.edu or look on CORE for more information.
