Pierce County is on a mission to turn unsightly vandalized areas into vibrant art spaces and they’re calling on mural artists to get the job done. The county has opened applications for three mural opportunities, placed strategically on Pierce County-owned properties where graffiti is a common sight. These spots include areas in the Tacoma-Parkland community, Parkland, and the Waller community, and their transformation is anticipated to not only deter vandalism but also cultivate community involvement and enhance the aesthetic appeal of these neighborhoods.
The effort is spearheaded by a Pierce County mural project, with budgets for individual spaces ranging from $10,000 to $75,000, covering essentials like insurance, supplies, and necessary permits. Reflecting a commitment to integrate art within its civic framework, this initiative is supported by a one-time fund specific to the 2024-25 fiscal cycle and the County’s steadfast “1% for the Arts Program”. According to the county’s announcement, artists who are eager to splash their talent onto these canvases need to meet the application deadline on March 31.
For interested artists, eligibility criteria include being 18 and above and authorized to work in the U.S., with proposals to be reviewed by the Pierce County Arts Commission. Providing a professional portfolio is part of the application process. Artists can sign up solo or as a team, and they have until 10 a.m. on the closing date to submit their work for consideration.
