JACKSON, Tenn. — USA Today released its top 10 U.S. cities with the best street art and Jackson is ranked as 3rd nationwide!
“Yeah we are so excited that we placed third. We’re third out of the best 10 and we’re definitely the smallest city in that list so it’s amazing that we’re in the top 10 and its even more amazing that we’re number three amongst the such big cities but Jackson’s getting that recognition,” said Claire Pierson, community development director for the City of Jackson.
The street art represents the culture and community of Jackson. The city and Our Jackson Home have partnered to showcase the creativity and talent of West Tennessee artists.
“We’ve worked really hard, especially this last year to make public art more apparent across the arts district, and worked hard on different projects. So to get this type of recognition within our first year of this kind of new initiative is really encouraging and makes us really grateful for the opportunity,” said Pierson.
The different pieces you see around town are reflective of the culture of that area. The public arts initiative honors Jackson’s history and encourages people to come together.
“So street art specifically makes our streets feel safer for both drivers and pedestrians. It’s been proven to slow down traffic. Makes pedestrians feel they can walk towards that crosswalk, that sidewalk, that has street art on it,” said Pierson.
City leaders say they’re looking forward to adding more street art across town in the future.
