Chisley, who credits the boxing classic for sparking the JNGL concept, said: “JNGL started with the concept of Muhammad Ali and George Foreman—the ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’ Taking that theory, we allow DJs to enter what we’re calling ‘the JNGL’ and then battle it out to see who’s the King (or Queen) of the JNGL. It’s a three-round tournament.” Each round tests a different skill, from technique to wordplay. The final round requires DJs to craft a set using a playlist dropped only 24 hours before the event, mirroring the spontaneous atmosphere of the original “Rumble.”
When Chisley adopted this iconic theme, he hoped to create excitement around DJ battles and reintroduce the energy that once defined them. “We really want to bring awareness to what a disc jockey does,” he explained. “DJs used to break new songs, and they’re a big pillar of hip-hop culture—really, of music in general.”

Beyond staging competitions, JNGL serves as a platform for DJs to gain exposure and education from some of the biggest names in the industry. “Only the best of the best make it out of the JNGL,” Chisley noted, explaining how the series aims to spot emerging talent and celebrate seasoned veterans alike. Chisley added, “One thing unique about JNGL is that we’ve incorporated an educational component, for both our contestants and the audience. Many people don’t fully understand what goes into DJing—like counting, timing, and all those nuances.” This real-time feedback allows the crowd to make more informed voting decisions.
