Music is in flux. We all see it. Social media and analytics seemingly dominate the direction of what matters to the industry. During a recent appearance on The Inner Court, legendary producer Timbaland didn’t hold back when sharing his candid thoughts about today’s music industry.
The Grammy-winning producer described today’s musical landscape as lacking the emotional depth that once defined the industry. He pointed to AI as an unexpected source of authentic creativity amid what he sees as a period of uninspired output.
The hitmaker, known for crafting timeless tracks for icons like Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, and Aaliyah, expressed disappointment with current trends while praising artificial intelligence’s creative potential.
“This election has caused a rift among us. The sound is bland, it lacks excitement,” Timbaland stated. “While we frequently discuss AI, I believe it’s the only entity that embodies a genuine soul right now. It allows for the expression of true feelings, resulting in art that resonates beautifully.”
There’s more … In a separate conversation on The Pivot Podcast, Timbaland opened up about his creative process during different phases of his career, including periods of substance abuse. While acknowledging successful collaborations like JAY-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love,” and Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience, he admitted his most impactful work came when he was sober.
“Creating was exhilarating during that time,” he recalled. “However, my most significant achievements occurred when I was sober. That’s simply the truth.”
Check this part out, he compared his drug-fueled projects to his earlier classics, noting a difference in lasting impact:
“I reflect on it now, and while those albums were enjoyable, they don’t shine like my monumental hits such as ‘Big Pimpin’,’ ‘Dirt Off Ya Shoulder,’ and ‘One In a Million.’ Those were produced during my drug-free days. Though the music from that era was good, it doesn’t carry the same weight as my standout records.”
