Ranchi: At 22, Vikash Kumar, a professional painter from the Chutia area, is spearheading a unique initiative to transform the city’s public spaces through art. Along with his dedicated team, Vikash is turning neglected walls into vibrant canvases, all at their own expense.
Vikash’s artistic journey began when he was studying in Class I, and by Class VIII, he turned his passion into a profession. After completing his education at the Lala Lajpat Rai School and St Xavier College, he embarked on a mission to beautify his hometown.
“My journey as an artist began with a simple love for painting but has evolved into a mission to enhance our city’s public spaces,” says Vikash. His inspiration came from observing walls defaced with offensive graffiti, prompting him to take action and create something beautiful instead.
Working alongside his team members Aniket, Sachin, Krishna, Puja, Rekha, Kunal and Priyanka, Vikash has completed impressive murals at several prominent locations in the city.
What makes their initiative remarkable is that they bear all material costs themselves, charging nothing from the public or the administration. Their first mural, completed in March 2024 in the Dhurwa area, marked the beginning of this ambitious project. The team has spent about Rs 1.90 lakh to beautify five locations with murals.
“We’re doing this work for free, using our own resources, as our way of giving back to the city,” Vikash explains.
“Our goal is not just to beautify these spaces but to bring people closer to art and create attractions that everyone can enjoy,” he added.
