
BEYOND THE STREETS describes itself as a worldwide educational movement, serving as a continuation of MOCA’s 2011 Art in the Streets show, curated by Roger Gastman. The focus is street and graffiti art, and the cultural capital they create takes many forms, from large-scale exhibitions and immersive pop-ups events to books, partnerships and multi-media projects. They’ve put on shows all over the world, from London to Shanghai to New York, but their flagship is a 40,000 square-foot gallery space located in Hancock Park, just north of Beverly and La Brea.
Here you’ll find an oft-changing exhibitions featuring contemporary and emerging artists, with a focus on huge group shows. The latest is new exhibition called PINK CLOUD, that introduces Los Angeles to the art of graffiti icon GREY (Jonas Melvin), who has been hailed as a trailblazer of San Francisco’s golden graffiti era. Also on view with be works from a slew of contributing artists, including Alexis Ross, Alicia McCarthy, Angel Castro, Barry McGee, Cheryl Dunn, Dan Murphy, Dave Schubert, Elberto Muller, GKAE, Mark Cross, MERCH, Stephen Powers, Timothy Curtis, Todd James, and more. The show’s opening reception is tonight (April 18 from 6 to 9 p.m.), then the exhibition continues during regular gallery hours through June 7. Give it a look!
