How much work does it take to keep D.C. clean?

There are 80 people employed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) in D.C., scrubbing graffiti off walls.

President Donald Trump had previously called on D.C. officials to remove graffiti in commonly visited areas, while also signing an executive order to have federal officials remove graffiti from federal lands. Mayor Muriel Bowser has worked on cleaning up the city through the DPW for years, said Acting Director of DPW Anthony Crispino.

In April, Bowser announced graffiti removal as part of her public works annual spring cleaning initiatives.

Workers use a chemical base to loosen the paint and then power wash it off. Sometimes the graffiti is simply painted over, according to DPW.

Crispino joined DPW employees to help remove graffiti in Northwest D.C. on Wednesday, sometimes finding older layers of graffiti under newer street art.

Crispino said he is proud of his staff and knows they are working hard to beautify the Capitol.
