Orange Coast College dance students performed a wide variety of dance styles, mixing inclusivity and dance at OCC’s Student Dance Showcase at the Robert B. Moore Theatre on May 21.

Some dance styles performed were jazz, modern, ballet, contemporary, tap, hip hop, and improvisation. Cultural dances were also involved, such as Middle Eastern, African, Latin, Mexican Folklorico and Polynesian.

OCC Hip Hop student dancer Sydney Larochelle spoke about the importance of dance shows that broadcast more than one style of dance.

“I think it shows the variety of what you can take here at OCC,” Larochelle said. “Also how important everything is and not just one style in particular.”

The event was hosted by OCC Chair of the Dance Department, Rachel Berman. She opened with a heartfelt speech to the audience about her love for her students and dance.

“We are happy to say that we are graduating [over] twenty more pilates instructors, five students with their associates in arts, four commercial dancers, and certificates of achievement for dance instructors,” Berman announced to the crowd.

Berman’s helpers were student volunteers who helped visitors with their tickets and seats.

OCC student volunteer Guillermo Nava felt it was important to include multiple cultural dances at the showcase.

“Orange County is a mix of a lot of different cultures,” Nava said. “I just think it’s important to showcase that in different ways.”

Not only did the crew feel good about the event, but also audience member Sophia Holmgren who is also a dancer.

“At least when I dance, I try to dive into all sorts of different things,” Holmgren said. “I think it’s important to learn all different fields of dance because it shows you all the different types of ways you can move. You can put that in all different types of ways of performing.”
