As we approach Black Music Month in June, it’s only fitting that the Grammy Museum celebrates and uplifts both hip-hop and R&B artists.

The museum will kick off the month with its second annual Hip-Hop Block Party on Wednesday, June 5, with every floor coming alive with the sights and sounds of Black music culture.

The event takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Grammy Museum, 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite A245, part of the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles. Attendees must be 18 or older.

“With such amazing artists as Luther Vandross featured at the museum—including his own exhibit—it was only fitting to include R&B in the celebration,” said Schyler O’Neal, the museum’s senior manager of education and community engagement. The first Hip Hop Block Party, held in June 2024, drew approximately 800 attendees.

In October 2024, the museum launched “Hip Hop America: The Mixtape Exhibit,” an immersive experience celebrating 50 years of hip-hop culture.

“The block party was created to showcase, celebrate and uplift local talents and businesses,” O’Neal said. He also confirmed that the National Black Musicians Coalition will be on site to host a jam session. Additional highlights include a Double Dutch activation and a podcast recording on the third floor.

According to a press release, poets will perform during an open mic session hosted by Barbara Fant and featuring Alyesha Wise and Yazmin Monet Watkins.

“There will also be a live DJ set, and The Syncopated Ladies—an all-female tap dance group led by Chloe Arnold—will perform. Many other artists will be participating as well,” O’Neal added.

A visually striking fashion-art installation curated by Andrew McFarland and Melissa McFarland Davis will also be featured. The event is supported by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Grammy Museum offers many educational programs and strives to keep its events affordable. General admission for the Hip-Hop Block Party is $11.50. Each person may purchase up to four tickets online.
