Beloved Houston Street Art Landmark Partially Demolished

It is the end of an era in Houston, Texas.  There is a building in Houston known as the Graffiti Building, AKA Graffiti Park, that has been admired for decades by locals.  The park consists of multiple buildings and has been a haven for street artists who have decorated it with beautifully painted murals and art.  Sadly, a portion of the popular spot was torn down by city officials earlier this week.

Hotspot for Community Adirmation

Once word about the site had gained traction, the park had ever-changing murals and art pieces painted by not only locals but people from all over the world.  This location became so popular, several community events, such as HUE (Houston Urban Experience), and a slew of others were held at the venue.

Origin Story

The initial building itself was built sometime in the early 20th century, likely between 1910 – 1920.  However, sometime in the 1990s, local artists began decorating the building’s exterior.  This started as a handful, and eventually more and more artists were decorating the site with more artwork until it eventually became what was known as “Graffiti Park”.

It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye

According to Chron, earlier this week, TxDOT was seen demolishing a portion of the building as part of the expansion of I-45.  While only a small part of the park has been destroyed, it is unclear if more buildings will also be taken down.

Have you ever been to Graffiti Park?  How do you feel about its destruction?
