JPR Productions founder John Reardon, also known as DJ Johnny Quest, has a huge presence in the South Florida club scene as a promoter and performer and has hosted a few other events at Blue Dog, but admits “Kid,” whose full name is Christopher Reid, will be one of the top acts he has brought in.
“I got to know (Reid) in LA when we did a show together back in 2015 and we’ve kept in touch,” Quest said. “His personality is the same as the characters he plays. Just loose, genuine and funny.”
Quest said Reid, 61, is flying into town on Saturday from Los Angeles solely for the event.
Reid was part of a huge hip-hop duo with Christopher Martin (“Play”) from New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Working alongside “DJ Wiz” Eastmond, they produced huge musical hits like Rollin with Kid N’ Play, Funhouse and Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody.
Their careers really took off when the duo branched off into acting and starred in six feature films, all centered on hip-hop culture-inspired themes. The first two films — House Party (1990) and House Party 2 (1991) — also featured then-relatively obscure actors Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell, who rose to fame with the sitcom Martin.
In the 1992 film Class Act, Reid changed his hair style from his brand of a seven-inch, vertical hi-top fade for braids.
The brunch will feature 1980s and 90s hip-hop, freestyle and retro songs on a video screen loop for the afternoon, Quest said. He’ll be spinning records along with Reid, who will also be on the mic and interacting with the crowd, “just hanging out.”
Will we see any of Kid’s signature dance moves and raps?
“I don’t know,” Quest said. “It depends on how many tequila shots he has Sunday.”
