Newly released footage shows the frightening way artists plastered an abandoned Los Angeles building worth a billion of dollars with graffiti.
The graffiti artists were able to cover 27 floors of Oceanwide Plaza, a deserted three-building project owned by Oceanwide Holdings, with colorful tags last week.
In a video released today, a man dressed in a red hoodie and gray sweatpants can be seen walking on the ledge of the building with no safety harness as another man captures the moment.
The daredevil continues to walk on what seems to be a balcony while holding on to the walls of the Plaza.
At one point, the videographer points the camera towards the ground to show the glittering lights of the city.
It is unclear how many floors high the duo were when they shot the footage.
After pictures of the graffiti went viral, multiple graffiti artists explained why the building was vandalized.
Merch, a graffiti artist, said taggers were inspired by a similar project for Art Basel at Miami Beach last year and wanted ‘to do an LA version.’
Talking about how they were able to access the building, the vandals said developers have allegedly not been paying the security guards at the site.
‘With all due respect, s*** is abandoned, doing nothing. Let’s put some color on this b— and do what we do if they ain’t gon finish the job,’ an artist named Hopes said.
The $1 billion mixed-use retail and luxury apartments project was left incomplete in January 2019 after its Beijing-based developer lacked the funds to complete it.
Daron Burgundy, a witness told KTLA that the artists had been covering building with spray paint for the last three nights.
‘Last night I heard that people have been coming from out of state to paint here.
‘LAPD mentioned that there might be an Instagram post floating around and apparently it was inviting people to come. It’s been wild to watch. It’s kind of interesting. It’s not so luxury around here anymore.’
The Los Angeles Police Department said last night in a tweet that it has teamed up with the district representatives to develop a plan to secure the property and remove the graffiti.
‘Today, Central Division personnel met with the property management and CD 14 representatives to collaborate on better securing the property and adding additional security measures.
‘The measures will be implemented immediately and the graffiti will be removed.’
The Oceanwide Plaza boasted twin 40-story buildings that could house 340 luxury condominiums and include private screening rooms, a dog washing facility and many other amenities on the property, at the time of building.
The building is right across the street from Crypto.com Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The Crypto.com Arena is home to the Lakers and hosted this year’s Grammys on February 4.
