Artist Tristan Eaton, best known for his large, multi-color murals, capped a year-long collaboration with Marvel during Miami Art Week with the opening of his exhibition Women of Marvel. Featuring over 40 original artworks, classic Marvel heroines are reimagined through Eaton’s lens.
The opening night at Wynwood’s The Private Gallery, which is the official gallery of Miami’s Museum of Graffiti, was buzzing with excitement. Backed by the beats of Computer Jay, whose mixtape album Heroes Are Villians was inspired by Eaton’s work, the room was packed with art lovers enthralled with Eaton’s take on these powerful women. My Modern Met co-founder and editor-in-chief Eugene Kim was on hand for the event, giving our followers a live look at the exhibition.
“I had the pleasure of attending the Heroes Are Villains Mixtape Listening Party & Gallery Night by Tristan Eaton at Private Gallery at the Museum of Graffiti,” says Kim. “As you can see, the collaboration between Tristan’s artwork and Marvel’s characters blends so well and seamlessly—it forms the perfect marriage. Hanging out amongst artists and creatives in Wynwood, Miami, at this event, particularly many legendary street artists, while taking photos and videos for My Modern Met was a privilege and an honor.”
From Jean Grey and Mystique to Spider-Woman and Storm, Eaton covers all the classic superheroines one would expect. For the Miami event he debuted a new take on these characters—the “Mosaic Covers” series. Inspired by the comic covers of legendary artist Jack Kirby, these generative prints are encased in premium acrylic slabs, making them unique collector items.
For Eaton, a lifelong fan of Marvel, the collaboration has been a dream come true. “As a painter and comic book fan, I’ve always been enthralled by the powerful art and narrative of superhero women,” he shares. “Culturally pervasive, these super powered ladies appear everywhere in our zeitgeist from Roy Lichtenstein paintings to illegally painted subway trains. Now, in a magical dream come true, full circle moment I’m able to bring my own painting style to the iconic Women of Marvel.
“The timing of this feels perfectly right. We’re in an age where everyone needs a role model who can kick some butt and make the world a better place, but especially young women, our sisters, our moms, and more,” Eaton continues. “It’s a great time to celebrate the power of women in fiction, pop culture, and in our everyday lives. I hope this collection elevates those stories as well as the timeless Women of Marvel that inspire us to be heroes in our own right.”
Women of Marvel is currently on view at the Private Gallery until February 2, 2025. Scroll down to see more from the opening night event, including our live tour of Eaton’s exhibition.
