To the Editor:
I travel across Upstate New York on a regular basis and there is one thing about driving around Central New York that irks me: graffiti.
Now don’t get me wrong, every area of the state has graffiti in some form, but it’s the bridges and support walls of the bridges in the Syracuse area and Onondaga County as a whole that are littered with markings or poorly painted cover-ups, making lasting impressions to visitors that are not something to write home about.
With all of the new highway construction comes new canvas for artists. This now includes sound barrier walls that could quickly become eyesores if graffiti artists are not held at bay. The current wall south of Seventh North Street on Interstate 81 is a perfect example of what should be a fairly decent looking wall but instead is peppered with spray paint. Drive through Rochester and view the many walls along the highway with little to no markings. It amazes me how few have been tagged. Even Utica has cleaned up much of its surfaces through the years.
I truly hope we here in the Syracuse area don’t allow the defacing of these new walls and bridges to occur without punishment. We need to keep our community presentable and desirable as we move ahead.
