DJ Unk passed away after he suffered from a heart attack.
The Atlanta rapper’s wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed his cause of death to TMZ on Sunday, January 26. She said Unk suffered a heart attack while he was asleep and never woke up. She announced his passing on Friday, January 24, in a heartbreaking post on Facebook. The cause of death wasn’t revealed at the time, which sparked several theories about how he died.
“Please respect me and my family,” she wrote. “I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER”
Unk’s wife shot down rumors that he passed from a drug overdose. She clarified that he did not do drugs. Unk had a history of heart issues dating back to 2009 when he suffered from a mild heart attack. According to AllHipHop, the “2 Step” rapper was treated and released shortly afterward. At the time, Unk denied drugs were involved and blamed his unhealthy diet. He also vowed to give up smoking marijuana.
“No more Kush, Purp, Piff, Haze, Sour desiel [types of marijuana] for me! No more drinks! Got to do this for my health!” he reportedly wrote on Twitter in 2009. “Live healthy! be healthy! Live unhealthy and suffer the concequences! [sic]. Keep god first and haters last! It’s not over till the fat lady sing.”
Unk, born Anthony Platt, rose to fame with his breakthrough hit “Walk It Out” in 2006. Later that year, he dropped his debut album Beat’n Down Yo Block!, which also features his other banger “2 Step.” Unk released his second album in 2008 but took a step back from music following his heart attack. He continued to drop singles and still performed on stages around the country.
DJ Unk was survived by his wife Sherkita and their five children. They are planning to hold a candlelight vigil in his hometown today. He was only 43.
