The Athletics have found a new home in the Sacramento region, and a bold new mural in a North Sacramento alley is ensuring they feel welcomed in style. This vibrant artwork was created by a collaboration of Bay Area graffiti artists and the nonprofit Graffiti for Good, aiming to transform not just walls but an entire neighborhood. For local resident Alton Ford, the mural is already making an impact. “In a way, it helps bind the people who live here,” said Ford. The new mural is steps from his door, and he admires the transformative colors and designs on the wall. “You know, it has the A’s, and then there’s one down here of a face. Really professional stuff. You know, it’s not just guys tagging,” said Ford. The project was spearheaded in part by the graffiti collective KTD Crew. Dopamine 189, a group member, expressed excitement about a piece that connects the Athletics’ Bay Area roots with Sacramento pride. “With the A’s right now and accepting our culture from the Bay, we have a lot of respect for Sacramento for that,” Dopamine said. The mural visually narrates the journey “From the Bay to Sac,” showcasing cultural touchpoints like a BART train juxtaposed with the Sacramento Kings logo. “It helps Sacramento be more of a beautiful place and also bridges the gap between the Bay and the Sacramento people,” said Dopamine. Transforming the neighborhood was a key goal for Graffiti for Good, the nonprofit that facilitated the project. Its representative, John Blair, reflected on the alleyway’s revitalized appeal. “This was an alleyway you didn’t want to walk down. Walk it as it is right now, and you’ll see something really unique. That’s really what we try to bring with any of the walls that we have – just a unique experience, something to go see, something to do,” said Blair. Dopamine adds that the mural serves a deeper purpose than just artistry; it’s about fostering community pride and inspiring future generations. “The A’s… They’re obviously influencing and inspiring the youth, and we plan to do the same thing,” said Dopamine.Graffiti for Good plans to continue working with artists to bring more murals to Sacramento, including potential tributes to Athletics players as the team acclimates to their new city.
