Bay City honors local rapper with “That Mexican OT Day”

For his impact on hip-hop, commitment to his work and love for his hometown, rapper Virgil Gazca, a.k.a. “That Mexican OT,” was honored last week by the Bay City city council.

Mayor Pro Tem Becca Sitz proclaimed Feb. 25, 2025, “That Mexican OT Day,” acknowledging the Bay City native Gazca as a rap star and trailblazer.

Gazca, 26, had a hit record in 2023 “Johnny Dang,” with Paul Wall and Drodi, that placed on the Billboard Hot 100 in advance of his debut studio album, Lonestar Luchador, and led to a deal with Interscope Records.

Gazca was all smiles as he shook hands and posed for pictures with council members and people in the audience, including fans, family, friends and other supporters, during a spirited ceremony that lasted 18 minutes.

“I appreciate it,” said Gazca, wearing a yellow hat, T-shirt, jeans and boots.

“Thank you.”

The city’s letter of proclamation, of which Gazca was awarded a framed copy, praised Gazca’s “unique sound, impactful lyrics, and powerful storytelling … creating a lasting impact on the music industry.”

“That Mexican OT has emerged as one of the most influential and talented rap artists of our time, skillfully blending diverse cultural influences and representing the voice of a new generation,” the proclamation began.

The proclamation later noted Gazca’s representation of his hometown, “which he loves and appreciates dearly, putting Bay City on the map and showcasing his deep connection to his roots.”

Gazca’s dedication, passion and authenticity, anchored with a propensity for wearing cowboy boots and cowboy hat in a typically urban hip-hop culture, “have set a new standard for excellence in hip-hop, demonstrating that hard work and staying true to one’s roots can lead to extraordinary success.”

Gazca endured a difficult upbringing. His father was incarcerated when he was a child and has not been involved in his life. His mother was killed by a drunk driver when he was eight years old.

Gazca found solace in hip-hop. He adopted the stage name “That Mexican OT,” with “OT” standing for “Outta Texas.” He started his career doing mixtapes earlier this decade, then got his big break with “Johnny Dang,” joining forces with Houston rap legend Paul Wall.

In his 2021 single “Texas Meskin,” Gazca raps: “Bay City, Texas, ridin’ ’round in the hood with my amigos …” and “I’m a Dirty Bay baby and I’m here to stay.”

Gazca’s pride for his hometown is also represented on his TikTok and YouTube channels.
