Break Dancing was presented as one of the newest Summer Olympics events at the 2024 Games in Paris. The Indiana State Fair “Battle” hosted by the 31SVN Street Dance Academy took place on August 3 at the newly installed basketball courts in the “Backyard Area” at the Purdue Extension Building.
‘Breakers’ rose up along the streets in the Bronx about fifty years ago with a boombox and a person showcasing musical innovation, physical dexterity, and coordination, along with a highly honed competitive spirit. I was aghast the first time I witnessed the boldness on sidewalks, sometimes with a mat, sometimes on bare concrete. If we think of ballet on the toe, asking the human foot, with a highly trained sense of artistry, to support a human body, break dancing has us watching the upper body connecting with the floor, with head spins and body part spins featuring an arm, hand, shoulder spins…
