Bristol violinist mural named as one of best in the world

A striking work of art depicting a violinist playing in a South Bristol street has been named as one of the best new pieces of street art in the world, after it was named as a nominee in the ‘Best of 2024’ global competition.

The work, on Lime Road in Southville, was painted in late May by Liam Bononi as part of the 2024 Upfest festival, and depicts Yorkshire-based street violinist Rupert Engeldow in full flow.

It has been named in the global ‘Oscars’ of street art, Inspiring City’s Street Art Cities awards, in the ‘experts spotlight’ category – which means it was nominated by other street artists – and is up alongside works of art on walls from South America to Europe and Australia.

There are around a dozen works of art from the UK nominated in the three categories, but the violinist of Lime Road is the only one from Bristol’s new batch of 2024 street art to make the list. The competition is now decided by public voting.

Described by Inspiring City as ‘spectacular’, the mural was painted by the Liverpool-based Brazilian street artist Liam Bononi after he photographed Rupert Engeldow performing on the street last winter.

“I decided I needed to bring it to life with this mural,” Liam said. “It was a long winter and it always amazes me how art can help us deal and develop our emotions for a period of time”.

The work is one of many on the gable end of buildings on side roads that face North Street in Southville, near to Upfest’s Bedminster home.

A spokesperson for Inspiring City said: “It’s a mural that captures attention. with bold composition and emotional depth. The use of the muted colours and capturing of raw energy creates a mesmerizing piece. It’s a mural that invites viewers to reflect on their own inner journeys. It reflects Bononi’s unique artistic style and connection to the city’s rich street art culture.”
