The rail operator c2c has condemned what it calls “completely unacceptable” vandalism, after several of its train carriages were covered in graffiti.
The spray-painted carriages were seen at Laindon station, near Basildon, on Monday morning.
Passenger Roy Donovan said the carriages resembled “a NY [New York] subway”.
A spokesperson for c2c said it would “ensure those responsible are held to account for their actions”.
“It is completely unacceptable for anybody to vandalise trains,” the spokesperson added.
“We are working with our British Transport Police [BTP] colleagues and are reviewing CCTV footage to investigate this incident.”
A BTP spokesperson said it had launched an investigation into criminal damage and inquiries were ongoing.
“We received reports at around 05:00 GMT today (9 December) of criminal damage to several train carriages,” the spokesperson said.
“Inquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016, quoting reference 52 of 9 December.”
