JACKSON, Tenn.—The Hub City is currently in a competition for art murals around the city.

A pinch of creativity, hours of hard work, and endless amount of community support can help Jackson become one of 10 cities recognized for art murals.

“We were nominated by a panel of experts who are nominating cities for USA Today for street art. We were one of 20 cities that were nominated by this panel to be included,” Lizzie Emmons, Program Director for Our Jackson Home, says.

Without applying for this recognition, Jackson is currently one of 20 cities across the United States to be considered.

“We were nominated because of our emerging public art scene, which is really cool that we’re getting that national recognition. We have a lot of momentum going in behind our investment and collective efforts to grow our public art,” she says.

These murals can be from sculptures or street and cross walk art.

“The street art is any art that you can see from the street, its not just murals in particular, we’re talking about all of our public art that you can see outside. All of our public art is included and most of our public art is in downtown in our arts district,” sais Emmons.

If this is your first time hearing of this competition, there is still time to vote for Jackson to have major bragging rights, of being one of 10 cities that has murals that encapsulates Jackson’s atmosphere.

“You can vote on “Our Jackson Home” website. There’s a link at the top of the website to go vote on “USA Today” website and polls will be open until February 17. We’ll know soon after if we made the top 10.”

Along with that, the City of Jackson and “Our Jackson Home” partnership will add three new murals to the city.

“Pretty soon we’re going to be installing another mural at the Farmer’s Market. A large-scale mural at ‘The Amp’ and a functional art installation at Anderson Park. So really focused in on that specific area of downtown, with a plan of installing even more public art over the next few years.”

Be sure to cast your vote and to take in some of the art right around the Hub City.
