BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) – Children in Mercer County had the chance to learn about the Hip Hop culture through a world-renowned artist.

Children at the Wade Center along with Princeton Primary School and Bluefield Middle School students participated in multiple workshops that were made possible through the “Culturefest in our Communities” program.

The program was started by the RiffRaff Arts Collective in Princeton.

On September 3, Master African Musician Adama Dembele taught students how to play the drums that are native to the Ivory Coast. On September 4, students learn all four elements Hip Hop from a Bahamian-American World Champion break-dancer who says it’s important to teach the youth about the culture.

“To give them the tools that they can use to create whenever they want,” said Hip Hop Break-dancer Devante Powell. “I know for me, when I first started dancing, it was very empowering for me that I could wake up and I could just create a move, or a movement, or a sequence of movements. As a youth, that just made such a difference because it made me feel like I could create my own outcome for certain things.”

Both artists will perform on Saturday September 7 for this year’s Culturefest activities.
