Community initiative brings colour to Phillipstown

The Valleys Street Art Project completed the artwork

A new piece of artwork has been unveiled in Phillipstown thanks to a community effort.

The mural, featured on the Phillipstown Community Centre, was completed by Valleys Street Art Project’s Steve Jenks.

Gwent Police helped to organise the project and funding was provided by a grant from Inspire Youth Cymru.

Local children, including members of the Heddlu Bach, got involved with the design of the mural which features farm animals, rural scenes and dragons.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “Following an increase in hate crime and antisocial behaviour in Phillipstown, New Tredegar, the local neighbourhood policing team worked with our Nxt Gen officers to come up with a project that would focus on improving cultural awareness, understanding, and respect from younger residents.

“They applied for funding for an antisocial behaviour project and, once successful, asked our Heddlu Bach to draw pictures that they felt represented the theme of community.

“These designs were then passed on to a local artist who, along with younger members of the community, brought the vision to life on the side of the community centre.”

They continued: “The team would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the project, including external partners, our school liaison officers, and members of our diversity and inclusion team.”
